Anthocyanins, the natural pigments that give tart cherries their deep red color.
Tart cherry powder's government name is Prunus Cerasus (Bitter Cherry) Fruit Powder. Don't let "bitter" fool you. It's the same sour cherry that goes into pie.
Superhero or supervillain?
Superhero. Its superpower is anthocyanins, the natural pigments behind that deep cherry red.
What it does in my soap and clay masks
I use tart cherry powder as a natural colorant. Anthocyanins change color with pH, and soap is alkaline, so the red tends to shift toward muted mauve, gray or brownish tones rather than staying cherry red. Like most natural colors, it can fade over time.
The color it makes
Here it is in 1 thing I make.
Usually seen with bentonite clay, elderberry powder and hibiscus.
Don’t judge an ingredient by its government name. Judge it by the science.
