The verdict

Superhero

Superpower

Clear crystals of magnesium sulfate that dissolve easily in bath water.

Epsom salt's government name is Magnesium Sulfate. Its nickname comes from Epsom, a town in England, where it was found in a bitter-tasting spring back in the 1600s.

Superhero or supervillain?

Superhero. Its superpower is that it dissolves quickly and completely, which is exactly what you want from a bath salt.

What it does in my bath soaks

Epsom salt is one of the classic salts in my bath soaks. It isn't table salt at all; it's a different mineral, magnesium sulfate. It gives the soak its sparkly crystals and dissolves right into the water.

The supervillain rumor

Epsom salt baths are often called "detox" soaks. A bath doesn't pull toxins out of your body. What Epsom salt does is make a nice, classic bath soak, and that's a fine job for a salt.

Where you’ll find it

In 2 things I make.

Usually seen with himalayan salt, sea salt, magnesium oil and dried grapefruit.

Don’t judge an ingredient by its government name. Judge it by the science.
