The verdict

Superhero

Superpower

A very concentrated magnesium chloride solution with a slick, silky feel.

Magnesium oil's government name is Aqua, Magnesium Chloride. In other words: water and magnesium chloride, a salt.

Superhero or supervillain?

Superhero. Its superpower is its feel. It's so concentrated that it feels slippery and oily between your fingers.

What it does in my skincare

I use magnesium oil in my magnesium body butter and in my bath soaks. In a body butter it adds that silky, slick feel, and some people notice a light tingle or a slightly salty feel as it dries. In a bath soak it dissolves right into the water along with the other salts.

The supervillain rumor

"Magnesium oil" isn't an oil at all. There's no fat in it. It's a salt dissolved in water, so concentrated that it feels oily. Magnesium chloride also pulls moisture from the air, which is why it never quite feels dry.

Where you’ll find it

In 3 things I make.

Usually seen with himalayan salt, sea salt, epsom salt and coconut oil.

Don’t judge an ingredient by its government name. Judge it by the science.
